What to enter in the cumulative GPA calculator

Enter your current cumulative GPA, the GPA-bearing credits behind it, your new semester GPA and that semester’s GPA credits. Both averages must be expressed on the same scale. The new semester should not already be included in the existing cumulative figure.

A transcript may list attempted, earned, transfer and GPA credits separately. Select the credits actually used to calculate the GPA. Successfully completed pass/fail or transfer work can count toward a degree while being excluded from a particular institutional GPA.

The cumulative GPA formula

Recover the quality points represented by each GPA by multiplying it by its credits. Add the two quality-point totals, then divide by the combined GPA credits. This is a weighted mean rather than a simple average of the displayed GPAs.

If you have 30 credits at 3.0, you have 90 quality points. Add 15 credits at 4.0 to get 150 quality points over 45 credits. The cumulative GPA calculator gives approximately 3.3333. The simple average of 3 and 4 would be 3.5 and would overstate the effect of the shorter term.

Combining more than two semesters

You can combine your earlier terms into a current cumulative figure and add the next term, then repeat as needed. Keep full precision where possible. If your institution provides an exact quality-point total, use that to check a calculation based on a rounded GPA.

For example, a displayed 3.33 may represent a slightly different underlying average. Multiplying that rounded display by 90 credits is an approximation. A small difference from an official transcript can therefore arise without a mistake in the weighted-average formula.

Transfer credits and repeated classes

Do not automatically add every transfer grade to an institutional cumulative result. A receiving institution may award credit without including those grades in its own GPA. Other contexts may calculate an overall or application GPA differently.

The cumulative GPA calculator also does not infer repeat replacement. Use the retake tool for simplified replacement or both-attempt scenarios, and check the actual policy. Avoid counting the new attempt once in the current total and again in the added semester.

Plan the next term without hiding uncertainty

Try several realistic term averages to understand the range of outcomes. A large existing credit total makes one new semester less influential, because it represents a smaller share of the combined denominator. That effect is mathematical, not a judgment about effort.

For a fixed goal, the target GPA calculator is more direct: it solves for the future average required. Use the cumulative GPA calculator afterward to verify the scenario by substituting that future average back into the combined calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I average two semester GPAs directly?

Only when the included credit totals are equal. Otherwise, weight each semester by its GPA credits.

Is cumulative GPA the same as CGPA?

CGPA commonly refers to cumulative grade point average, but institutions may define the included work differently.

Does this replace my official transcript?

No. This is an independent planning tool. Your institution decides which courses count, assigns grade points and applies its own repeat and display rules.

Are my grades sent to a calculator service?

The calculator runs in your browser. Inputs are not submitted to our server by the calculator. Saving is optional and uses this browser’s local storage; a CSV export creates a file on your device.

Can I use a different grading scale?

Choose the matching preset or Custom numeric points and enter the values from your school’s published policy. The maximum field is a validation limit, not an automatic conversion between scales.

Keep your next step clear

Use the cumulative gpa calculator to review the selected scale, credits and assumptions before using the result. Keep actual grades separate from projected scenarios and compare the estimate with your school’s instructions.
